My STC Colleagues, I am honored to be a candidate for the STC Board of Directors in 2019. I want to contribute to governing a thriving Society with flourishing communities. We need to embrace the evolving needs of students and new professionals while serving our veteran members as they grow as technical communicators. From representing students on the Community Affairs Committee as a student to hosting the 2018 Summit as Florida chapter president, my career in technical communication has been forged through my years of STC volunteerism.

My roles in the Florida chapter have taught me to balance the needs of our membership with the realities of managing organizational expectations. I have fostered my passion for student outreach through co-managing the mentoring program, pairing students at the University of Central Florida with professionals in the industry. Beyond STC, I have grown throughout my career in academe, hospitality, and financial services where I have applied my communication and problem-solving skills to drive innovative solutions.

I want to see the Society continue to deliver on the value of our educational resources and services for all members. Communicating our value proposition to students and young professionals can be daunting, and I hope to provide personal insight into the goals and expectations of young technical communicators. I would appreciate the opportunity to take what I have learned and contribute to a STC on the Board of Directors.

Dungeons and Dragons: My Other Life

If you Google “Bethany Aguad” or follow me on social media, you will find everything is related to two interests:

  • STC and technical communication
  • Dungeons and Dragons

In my non-STC life, I produce a Dungeons and Dragons podcast, DnD RAW, with my husband and friends. At the 2018 Summit, I was surprised and thrilled when an attendee at my presentation asked me a question about what kind of characters I like to play. This reinforced what I have always believed: that the qualities and aptitudes that lead us to technical communication also make us outstanding players of tabletop role playing games.
